Health disparities in the United States will be center stage as former Secretary, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Louis W.  Sullivan, M.D. is joined by members of Congress and other leaders of the Association of Minority Health Professions Schools (AMHPS) on Capitol Hill July 20, 2010.

Sullivan will emcee the evening event in the Longworth House Office Building to recognize and celebrate the elevation of the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities to an Institute. Members of Congress who were instrumental in the establishment of the Center will be honored.  They include Representative Donna M. Christensen (D-VI), Senator Arlen Specter (D-PA), Representative Jessie Jackson, Jr. (D-IL), Representative Elijah Cummings (D-MD), and Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD).  Charles Drew University, Howard University Health Sciences, Meharry Medical College, and Morehouse School of Medicine will host the event.

“Health disparities are an important national problem,” said Sullivan.  “We hope this event will serve as a show of support to bring attention to this crisis.”
